Kratos is a quiet angsty individual, who holds a lot of personal guilt about events in his past. Because of this, he can sometimes appear bitter about life and in the past he has had no worries about the prospect of death. He is not quick to open up to people and it can take a lot of perserverance and hard work before he trusts someone enough to let them get to know him. At first he may appear cold and uncaring, perhaps even aloof, but if a stranger digs deep enough they will find a loyal, understanding and above all friendly person. Kratos is a devoted father and husband, and will do anything to protect his family and those he cares about, even if it means putting himself in danger. He is also described as a fatalist, one who believes that fate plays an integral role in why certain things happen throughout life, although by now this opinion has been challenged.
Kratos rarely shows his emotions outwardly, unless he is annoyed or angry. He is serious to a fault and one should think themselves lucky if they ever give him cause to smile.

Kratos was originally one of the companions of Mithos the Hero and accompanied him along with Mithos' sister Martel and his friend Yuan, aiding him in putting a stop to the Ancient Kharlan War which occurred 4000 years ago. The four of them somehow developed the ability to stop the aging process and in Kratos' case, he stopped aging at 28.
During their journey, the four of them faced many hardships due to discrimination against half-elves - Kratos being the only human in the group. Mithos and Martel were shunned from their home in Heimdall, where the pure-blood elves live. Sometime later, they met up with Kratos who trained Mithos in the use of a sword as well as in magic. Mithos then travelled the world, making pacts with each of the Summon Spirits, until he finally came across the King of Summon Spirits, Origin. He had Origin create the Eternal Sword, which could alter space and time. With this sword, Mithos split the world into two worlds - Sylvarant and Tethe'alla - in order to prevent any more magitechnology from being created. Magitechnology consumed vasts amounts of mana - which was best described as the 'life force' of the planet, which enabled life to flourish and magic to be used. Therefore, Mithos was heralded as a hero for preventing a second cataclysmic war.
Unfortunately, sometime during the journey, Martel was killed by a human. With her last breath, Martel told Mithos that she wished for a world without discrimination, but Mithos misinterpreted these words to mean a world free from persecution against only half-elves and set out to create a world where all beings were alike. He also developed a deep hatred for humankind. Part of the pact with Origin was a promise that he would restore the Great Seed to the world so that it could grow again; thus restoring mana to the world. Instead, Mithos took it to the holy land of Derris-Kharlan, where the elves were said to originate from, in order to revive and protect his dead sister, thereby breaking his pact with the Summon Spirits. He created an organisation of evolved half-elves called 'angels' and named it Cruxis. He also controlled another faction of half-elves called Desians who researched the manufacture and compatibility of Exspheres which are required in order to transform all half-elves into lifeless, soulless angels. To lead Cruxis, and the two worlds, he became an angel himself along with Yuan and Kratos, and appointed himself its leader. Along with Martel, they would become the Four Seraphim who would lead the world to a new age with no discrimination. Half-elves became angels by applying a Cruxis Crystal (an evolved form of Exsphere) to their body, but because Kratos was human, he had to ingest a rare mineral named Aionis Ore to become an angel. This also enabled him to use magic, something that only those with elven blood can usually do. By developing the Church of Martel and manipulating the two worlds, Mithos devoted himself to resurrecting his dead sister and searched for a new vessel to receive her soul. In order to do this, Mithos manipulated marriages on the two worlds, thus manipulating bloodlines until a suitable vessel was found. He then led a compatible 'Chosen' from each world on a Journey of Regeneration which they believed would save their dying world. In reality, the Chosen died and became Martel's vessel and by forming and breaking links at the various Seals found across the world, mana from one world flowed into the other, creating a neverending cycle of growth and decline. Many Chosen died on their journey, and none were compatible as a body for Martel for a long time yet...

Humans were captured by the Desians and used as research subjects to develop Exspheres. At some point, Kratos met a human slave named Anna at the Asgard Human Ranch and fell in love with her. Anna carried a special, flawless Exsphere that had been developed for the Angelus Project by the leader of the ranch, Kvar. The Angelus Project hoped to discover a way to form a Cruxis Crystal inside a human body. Despite the fact it went against Mithos' wishes, Kratos escaped from the ranch with Anna. They were relentlessly pursued by the Desians, but managed to evade them for a time. Soon they got married and had a baby boy whom they named Lloyd. However, a few years later, Kvar and his men caught up with them. Kvar removed Anna's Exsphere causing her to to change into a monster as Exspheres cannot be safely removed from the body without first being mounted on a Key Crest. Anna lost control and attempted to devour Lloyd, but a creature named Noishe who had also travelled with Kratos 4000 years ago, managed to protect him, although he was injured in the process. Anna managed to gain control at this time momentarily, and begged Kratos to kill her. At first Kratos couldn't bring himself to do it, but Anna attempted to attack Lloyd for a second time and Kratos lashed out to protect him, fatally wounding her. Kvar then used this opportunity to attack, and Lloyd, Noishe and Anna all fell from the cliff. After fighting off Kvar and his men, Kratos descended the cliff but found nothing more than Desian corpses half-eaten by monsters, concluding that both his wife and his son were now dead.
Losing all sense of meaning in his life, Kratos returned to Cruxis with the intent of following Mithos' ideals. Later on, he was appointed as an escort for the Chosen of Sylvarant - Colette Brunel. It was then that he met Lloyd again who was now 17 years old, having been found and raised by the dwarf, Dirk. Kratos stuck to his mission, however, and led Colette through the Journey of Regeneration until they reached the Tower of Salvation and the truth was revealed. Kratos appeared to carry on working for Mithos as Lloyd and his friends strived to end Mithos' reign and find a new way to save both worlds, but in fact he was looking for a way for a human to wield the Eternal Sword, so the two worlds could become one again. Eventually, Lloyd found out that Kratos was indeed his father. They succeeded in stopping Mithos and caused the Great Seed to germinate and a new Giant Kharlan Tree to grow, thus restoring mana to the world. Martel's soul became one with a doll-like girl named Tabatha and her spirit incorporated into the tree to become its new guardian.
Leaving Lloyd to dispose of the Exspheres on the newly joined world, Kratos decided to go to Derris-Kharlan, where Mithos was intending to take the angels and Martel once his work was done, to jettison the remaining Exspheres into space and bear the responsibility of Cruxis' legacy.
